Kanchenjunga base camp

Also known as Kang-tchen Dzö-nga, Kangchenjunga means “the mountain of the five magnificent treasures.” It is located on the border between Koshi Province in eastern Nepal and the state of Sikkim in India, and is the third highest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters. This stunning trek takes you to the far east of Nepal, a little-visited region. Enjoy the beautiful sunrise over Kangchenjunga at Oktang, the south base camp, and the breathtaking scenery at Pangpema, the north base camp. This is a challenging route, but of rare beauty, reserved for experienced trekkers and adventure enthusiasts.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu – Bhadrapur – Taplejung

Early in the morning, transfer to the airport for the Kathmandu – Bhadrapur flight (a town in the Terai, in the far east of Nepal). Upon arrival at Bhadrapur airport, transfer by private local jeep to Taplejung. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 2: Taplejung – Lalikharka (2,280 m) – Kande Banjyang (2,125 m)

Departure by private local jeep to Lalikharka, then continue on foot to Kande Bhanjyang. Approximately 6 hours of walking, with +715 m ascent and –885 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 3: Kande Banjyang (2,125 m) – Mamanke (1,780 m)

7 hours of walking, with +660 m ascent and –1,040 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 4: Mamanke (1,780 m) – Sherpagaon (2,050 m)

5 hours of walking, with +710 m ascent and –510 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 5: Sherpagaon (2,050 m) – Torongden (3,040 m)

7 hours 30 minutes of walking, with +1,570 m ascent and –840 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 6: Torongden (3,040 m) – Tseram (3,885 m)

5 hours of walking, with +800 m ascent and –130 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 7: Tseram (3,885 m) – Rest day

Acclimatization day, exploring the valley leading to the pass toward the Sikkim border. Overnight stay in a lodge in Tseram.

Day 8: Tseram (3,885 m) – Ramche (4,483 m)

3 hours of walking, 7 km, with +500 m ascent and –50 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 9: Ramche (4,483 m) – Oktang / Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4,780 m) – return to Tseram (3,885 m)

6 hours 30 minutes of walking, with +380 m ascent and –930 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 10: Tseram (3,885 m) – Mirginla (4,645 m) – Selele (4,220 m)

7 hours of walking, with +920 m ascent and –680 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 11: Selele (4,220 m) – Ghunsa (3,400 m)

3 hours 30 minutes of walking, with +150 m ascent and –850 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 12: Ghunsa (3,400 m) – Kambachen (4,100 m)

5 hours of walking, with +860 m ascent and –160 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 13: Kambachen (4,096 m) – Lhonak (4,750 m)

4 hours of walking, with +650 m ascent and –120 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 14: Lhonak (4,750 m) – Pangpema / Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (5,100 m) – return to Lhonak (4,750 m)

Approximately 7 hours of walking, with +500 m ascent and –500 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 15: Lhonak (4,750 m) – Ghunsa (3,400 m)

7 hours 30 minutes of walking, with +300 m ascent and –1,440 m descent. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 16 : Ghunsa (3400m)

Rest day. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 17 : Ghunsa (3400m) – Kyapra(2730m)

4 hours 30 minutes of walking. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 18 : Kyapra(2730m)– Amjilassa (2490m)

4 hours of walking. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 19 : Amjilassa (2490m) – Sekathum(1660m)-Taplejung

Trek to Sekathum, then transfer by private local jeep to Taplejung. Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes of walking and 3 to 4 hours by jeep. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 20 : Taplejung- Bhadrapur

Transfer to Bhadrapur by private local jeep. Overnight stay at a hotel or guesthouse near the airport.

Day 21 : Bhadrapur – Kathmandu

Morning flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to Nirvana Garden Hotel.
